About Us

Rooted in compassion. Built for The Villages.

Our Story

Susan McGaughey, founder of Calm Harbor Cares

Susan McGaughey,  Director

This mission is deeply personal to Susan McGaughey, our Director.  Her mother, Beverly, lived with dementia, and her father, Joe, became her devoted caregiver. Sue witnessed firsthand the emotional, physical, and financial challenges that dementia placed on both of them — and on their entire family.

As she watched her mother gradually lose her memories, she also watched her father faithfully stand by her side with unwavering love, patience, and devotion. Their journey became the inspiration for creating the Calm Harbor Respite Club — a place where individuals living with memory loss can experience joy, friendship, and purpose, while their caregivers receive the support, encouragement, and time to rest that they so richly deserve.                    "Come to me, all who are weary and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest."                                                                          Matthew 11:28

Our Mission

“To provide a safe, engaging, and compassionate day respite program that enriches the lives of adults with cognitive challenges — and brings meaningful relief to the family caregivers who love them.”

What We Stand For

  • Dignity

Every participant is treated with the utmost respect, honoring who they are and the life they have lived.

  • Compassion

We lead with empathy — for participants, for families, and for the caregiving journey in all its complexity.

  • Connection

Meaningful relationships and social engagement are at the heart of everything we do each day.

  • Safety

Families trust us with their most precious people. We take that responsibility seriously every single day.

Proud to Serve The Villages

The Villages is a community built on active living, friendship, and caring for one another. Calm Harbor Cares is honored to be part of that fabric — offering a local resource that keeps families together and helps caregivers stay strong for the long journey ahead.
